Strategy
It all starts with strategy. I understand that in life, as in art, preparation is one of the most crucial elements to finding success. In order to get to where we are going we need to know, first, where are we going, and second, how do we get there? It seems simple but very few people approach it in a well-organised way with clarity and efficiency. Front loading your plans with content schedules, brand messaging pillars, and doing the dirty work in advance (things like identifying hashtags, understanding best practices for each platform etc etc) makes life much, much MUCH easier going forward.
I will lead you through a process to discover your where and your how:
a health check of your branding to ensure it is consistent, aligns with your product and is aesthetically appealing. Updates as appropriate;
identifying your goals as a business or artist and the platforms best suited to meet those;
Creating a strategy to achieve those goals. For example, if it is to release music and increase listeners, the release strategy must consider the content required, plan for it, execute it, identify collaborations and/or labels to partner with, ensure all landing pages are well maintained and hook the listener, make submissions to relevant and well-researched playlists, consider publishing deals, obtain interviews and features etc to build hype, Meta Ads (if possible) are highly advisable, seeking radio play, and coming up with a creative way to perform the music to support the release. A touring strategy would look very different and, of course, strategies change over the course of an artist’s life depending on where they are in their cycle;
put together a content plan that is aesthetically beautiful and contains strong messaging based on “pillars”. So, identifying the messaging and then doing a content calendar;
Create the content; and/or
Monitor insights/results and tweak from time to time until the strategy changes.
Since 2018, I have been supporting artists to achieve their goals, including formally managing several artists. As a nerd (!) I have undertaken several marketing and promotion courses, studied music marketing, worked in major music festivals in the role as artist liaison, and have also had some limited success as an artist myself.
It all started in 2018 when I was living in Amsterdam practising as a lawyer but on my way out from that world - music and media was taking over my life… my apartment had became the local hangout for my crew, some very talented musicians. We’d spend the nights jamming away on the rooftop or sitting on the loungeroom floor, finding the most magic of moments of collaboration. Not long after, a friend mentioned we should come play some tunes at her charity night and I thought, “we need to do something with this”. Het Muziekcollectief (HMC) was born.
What’s more, as a transactional corporate lawyer of 17 years I possess I high degree of organisational skills, project management skills, business acumen and, of course, legal experience. By working with me you are working with someone who has worked in the most prestigious business organisations in the world, as well as at major music festivals, with a track record of success.
I can work on an hourly basis or for a fixed fee. My rates are low as I know how costly it is being an independent artist, I can be flexible for the right opportunities. Contact me for rates and/or a cost-free consultation.
